The Sketchbook: An Animated Short Film

My friend and coworker, Chris Williams, just launched a project on kickstarter for an animated short. I filmed, recorded audio, mixed and edited the video for the pitch. It's going to have a great style and even more important a great story! If it's something you're interested in seeing completed, donate! You can also help spread the word by sharing the link to his kickstarter page!

Spielberg One Shot Takes

I've always enjoyed studying and breaking down Spielberg's camera work.  He does a great job creating new compositions within his long one shot takes by repositioning the cameras, the characters, or both at once rather than following them around with a steadicam.  This is a cool video collection of some of those shots.

Puss In Boots test

I did this dialog test in early 2011 while I was at DreamWorks animating cycles on Puss In Boots. I would show my progress to Olivier Staphylas, the supervising animator of Puss, and after I finished he actually talked the studio into allowing me to do those two shots in the film. I had a blast working with Olivier and really appreciate him giving me the chance to animate those shots!

A Minute Between the Hour

Last weekend I participated in the vimeo weekend challenge to go out and shoot some footage during the first and last hour of sunset during the day, also known as the magic hour. It's always nice to have some sort of challenge that gives you something to focus on and learn from. The video had to be edited down to one minute or less. Here's my completed entry:

From the Mailbox

Got this in the analog inbox on Monday. I was going to share an electric bill but second guessing myself, I went with this instead. Starting in September I'm going to be heading to Blue Sky for temp work on Ice Age:Continental Drift! I've never been to New York or any part of the upper east coast before so I'm excited to get out there and check it out. I've heard great things about the people at Blue Sky as well. It'll be somewhere around 4-6 months of what I'm expecting to be a great experience! Between meeting new people, awesome animation, and exploring the town I'm sure the time is going to fly by. Now I just need to find out who's playing poker and where...

I'm definitely going to miss my DreamWorks Animation family but hope to squeak my way back in eventually! You have all been amazing coworkers and friends so it'll be a pleasure to work with you again! -deuces

In case you didn't piece together the word puzzle from my last post, it was - Cross Country Trip. :)

How To Train Your Dragon interview with AM

About 6 months ago four other animators and myself took part in an interview with Animation Mentor to talk about working on How To Train Your Dragon. They shot two lengthy interviews, one with two animators up at PDI and another here in Burbank with three of us from the Glendale campus. The first video, A Toothless Dinner, released back in October was cut down to a 9 minute clip but here are some more videos they've cut from the interviews. I had a lot of fun taking part in this and enjoyed hearing what Mike Stern, Tyler Phillips, Ron Pucherelli, and Dane Stogner had to say about their experiences on the film as well! I'd like to thank AM for asking me to be a part of it and hope to see them continue these interviews with others!

TP!

My friend Steve recently put up some fake trees outside his cube and in my mind, that's just asking for it:) So an unnamed friend, only because I can't pronounce it, helped me tp(toilet paper, for those that don't know) it.

Number of nights trees lasted before getting tp'd...zero.

"Murder" Dialogue Test

Since I haven't posted any personal animation here in a while I figured I'd post an update to an old shot. I'm getting close to calling it quits and parting ways with this one, hopefully.
